At a recent card-making class, attendees were asked why they come to the weekly session. These were their responses:
- “I enjoy it.”
- “It’s fun and relaxing.”
- “You have something at the end of it, and the people who receive the cards hopefully appreciate them.”
- “It’s good company and good biscuits with a cuppa!”
- “It’s an opportunity for self-expression.”
The class leader, Sue, told the group: “I love craft. I’ve always enjoyed it, since I was a little girl.”
Sue attended art college and went on to have the wonderfully creative job of being a primary school teacher.
No doubt she has picked up many craft ideas from the different places she has lived, both in the UK and Europe, including the Midlands, Germany, and now Spain.
How long has Sue been making cards?
She said: “Since 2008. I’d seen something and thought I’d have a go. I’ve not looked back!”
Sue also shared how she made all the invitations for her daughter’s wedding, which added something personal and very special to the occasion.
Each week, Sue creates a card that is displayed on a small easel as a model for those attending the session. Once you’ve been coming to the classes for a while and have mastered the crafting techniques, you can begin to develop your own approach to the card design.
Sue explained: “Everyone makes the same card, but they all turn out differently. As confidence builds, people do their own thing — and I love that.”
Currently, Sue shares model designs ranging from greetings cards to Christmas cards. She plans to expand into making gift boxes, much to the excitement of the group.

Sue loves all things craft but feels quite the opposite about having her photo taken — so instead, the photo shows one of her birthday card creations!
